Frequently asked questions

General

What is the Canit service?

Canit is a mobile application for buying and selling refundable cans and bottles. Read more on What is Canit? -page.

Who is Canit for?

The Canit application is made for people who want to get rid of their refundables as easily as possible or who want to collect refundable cans and bottles to make some money.

Is there an age limit to use the app?

The Canit app is available for anyone 16 years and older. Younger people can use the app with a parent's or a guardian's consent.

How much does it cost to use the Canit app?

The Canit app is free and you can list the refundables for sale for free. If you want to purchase refundables from sellers, you need to load money into your Canit app. You pay half of the return value of the bottles.

What are the circles and prices on the map in the app?

The circles are listings of available refundables posted by sellers who use the Canit app. The price inside the bubble is the amount you need to pay for the bottles. When you click to open a specific listing, you will see detailed information on the price of the refundables, how many bottles and cans (with different deposit values) are available and how much you will receive when you take the bottles to a reverse vending machine.

How does the money get divided in the app?

The buyer pays half of the return value of the cans and bottles. This amount gets split evenly in half between the seller and the Canit app.

You pay €2.50 when you choose to buy those bottles. The seller gets €1.25 and the Canit app gets €1.25.

How do I transfer money from my Canit account to my bank account?

You can transfer the sum or a part of it from your Canit account to your bank account anytime. You can make the transfer from “Account” and then “Transfer money to your bank account”.

We charge a €1 transfer fee for transfers under €10. For transfers exceeding €10, we will pay the transfer fee for you. Your money will appear on your bank account within 1-3 business days.

Returning bottles

How much do I get from the bottles when I sell them through Canit?

In estimation-listing: You receive €0.88 for each full bag you sell.

In exact-listing: You get 25% of the value of refundable bottles and cans.

How do I post a listing?

You have two options to post a listing: Exact and Estimate.

The exact listing gives the exact amount of cans and bottles you want to sell. You receive 25% of the deposit value when someone buys and picks up your bottles. You don’t need to know the deposit value of individual refundables when you list them.

In the estimate listing, you give the number of cans and bottles as numbers of bags. You will get €0.88 to your Canit account of each bag you have listed when the buyer picks up the bags from you. One bag is a regular-sized grocery bag.

What if I want to cancel my listing?

You can cancel your listing any time.

But be fair. If you have already accepted a buyer who is on their way to pick the bottles up from you, cancelling your listing then is not very fair. If you still wish to cancel your listing, it is good manners to let the buyer know about it via the chat feature. You can find a pre-defined message you can use for this.

What if I list the refundables incorrect?

If you have made a mistake in the amounts you’ve listed, you can correct this afterwards. If you are editing a listing that already has a buyer candidate, the candidate will disappear from the app after you have made the edits. After editing the listing, the buyer need to send their buy request again.

If you have chosen a buyer, you can still edit the listing but can no longer increase the price. In this case, the selected buyer candidate remains the same.

If you notice an error when the buyer has already arrived at your place, we advise you to be honest about the mistake. Please remember that everyone you make a trade with can give you feedback.

When do I get my share of the money?

You get your share when the buyer comes to you and both parties accept the trade in the Canit app. Make sure you do this, because it is not possible to transfer the money to your account later!

Can I list bottles that don’t have a deposit value?

At the moment, you can only return refundable cans and bottles through the Canit app. Keep the non-refundables separate from the refundables. Of course you can always ask if the buyer is willing to take non-refundable bottles with them. For recycling, it is important to get all aluminum cans properly processed.

You can give the exact amount of cans/bottles in the app. If there are non-refundables in the bag you are selling, you can let the buyer know that you are selling half a bag. In this case, it is fair to tell the buyer that there are non-refundables. This way it will feel fair for both parties. :)

What should I do if the buyer doesn’t show up?

Canit app has a chat feature that can be used to communicate with the seller. If the buyer does not answer to the messages or simply doesn’t show up as agreed, you can discard the buyer. When you do this, your listing immediately becomes visible again.

Select a new buyer from them.

Who can see my address?

Your exact address will only be visible to the user you have chosen as the buyer. The user you selected can see your exact address or location in the extra information field.

For other users, your address shows only as a street name and a circle on the Canit map.

Collecting bottles

How does bottle recycling work in the Canit app?

First, you need to load money into the Canit app. You use this balance to make buy requests. When you have transferred the money to your account, you can:

  1. Make a buy request to a listing near you.
  2. When the seller selects you as the buyer, you go to pick up the refundables.
  3. Return the bottles to a reverse vending machine. You will get about double the money that you invested!

For example, when buying cans and bottles for €10, you can get up to €20 from the reverse vending machine after you have returned the cans and bottles.

How do I transfer money into my Canit account?

You can add money by going to ”Account” and select ”transfer money to my Canit account”. Most online banks can be used for this transaction. You can always transfer the money back to your own bank account.

Why do I need money on my Canit account to make the buy request?

You need money on your Canit account to make sure that the situation between you and the seller is as simple as possible when you meet.

When you make an offer to buy the bottles, we deduct the amount from your Canit account. If you cancel the buy request, or you are not selected as a buyer, the money is immediately and automatically returned to your Canit account.

The final transfer doesn’t take place until the seller gives you the bottles and you both accept the sale in the Canit app.

You always have a total control over your own Canit account balance!

How do you determine the price of the beverage packages?

Users cannot adjust the selling price in the Canit app. Prices are fixed and they are based on the return value of the bottles. Sellers can list their refundables in two ways; either by itemizing bottles individually or by estimating the amount and listing them by number of bags.

  • Exact In this listing you will know exactly how many cans and bottles you are buying. If the listing contains 24 cans, you pay €1.80 to purchase them (the deposit for one beverage can in Finland is €0.15). Once you return the cans to a reverse vending machine you get €3.60, double the amount that you paid.
    You just made €1.80.
  • Estimation
With this listing option, the seller has listed available refundables in grocery bags and the specific number of cans and bottles is not known. You will pay €1.75 for one bag. When you return a bag of bottles to a reverse vending machine, you will most likely receive over double your investment. One regular-sized grocery bag fits cans and bottles worth of approximately €3,60€.
    You just made €2.

What should I do if the seller’s listing isn’t right?

We recommend always to check the number of cans and bottles when you go and pick them up. If you notice that the listing is inaccurate, you can ask the seller to adjust it in the Canit app. Note that the amount you pay depends only on the seller’s listing. If there is a noticeable difference, request the seller to relist the items correctly.

What should I do if the seller isn’t there when I arrive for a pickup?

Canit app has a chat feature that can be used to communicate with the seller. You can choose from several pre-defined responses and notify the seller that you are at the door or you can't get in.

If the confusion continues, or the seller doesn't respond, you can cancel your buy request. When you do this, your money will immediately be transferred back to your Canit account.

What if the seller lives in an apartment house and the front door is locked?

The seller can post a door code within the Canit app to get in. If this information is not available, you can use the in-app chat feature to notify the seller that you are by the door and can’t get in. You can choose from several pre-defined responses and notify the seller that you are at the door or you can't get in. This way the seller can come and open the door for you.

Do I need to pay taxes of this income?

The money earned from recycling bottles is taxable income.

What if there are several non-refundable bottles in the bag I'm buying?

We have emphasized that users can only return refundable cans and bottles with a deposit. As a buyer, you can always check the contents of the bag before buying it. If there are several non-refundables in the bag, the seller can correct the number in the application before you both verify the trade. The amount charged from your Canit account equals to the corrected amount.

The price of the bag is set so that the buyer will profit even if some bottles are non-refundable. However, we hope that the sellers would not deliberately hide non-refundable bottles but keep them separate.

You can also rate the trade partner after the sale.

If the contents of the bag end up being full of non-refundable bottles and your profit remains minimal or you don’t make any, please contact us at support@canit-app.com.
